American Bubs vs Swedish Bubs: How Do They Compare?

What Are American Bubs?

As you may have noticed, Bubs have made their way to North America! Many TikTok videos show users finding and buying Bubs mini bags at Kroger, Five Below, Walgreens and Target. Even before the "American Bubs" hit Target's shelves, other retailers were selling Swedish candy at their supermarkets. The flavors currently available for purchase are: Bubs Sour Diamond Tutti Frutti, Bubs Sour Diamond Strawberry Vanilla, Bubs Sweet Ovals Banana Toffee and Bubs Sour Skull Lemon Raspberry.

Do American‑made Bubs match the flavor and texture of the Swedish originals? Are the ingredients truly comparable, and can consistency hold up?

Let's take a closer look and find out!

First, the bags state that the U.S. Bubs are manufactured in Mexico. Although Mount Franklin Foods is headquartered in El Paso, TX, these Bubs are not produced in the U.S.

A review of the ingredients shows they are mostly the same. However, the "American Sour Diamond Tutti Frutti" contains Blue 1, an ingredient not found in the Swedish "Tutti Frutti Rhombs."

Another difference is that the Mexican‑made Bubs use corn syrup, whereas the Swedish version of Bubs uses glucose‑fructose syrup.

So from the outset, the "American Bubs" and the "Swedish Bubs" are not the same.

Do the Bubs from the U.S. taste the same as the Bubs from Sweden?

After questioning several customers about the flavors of these newly made Bubs compared to the original Swedish Bubs (and according to this TikTok video) it’s clear that the American/Mexican Bubs fall short of the flavor of the traditional Swedish ones.

The flavors, taste, smell, and colors are different. While the consistency may be similar, many find these BUBS do not deliver the same quality as the Swedish originals.

Did BUBS Sweden, or Orkla Confectionery and Snacks re-brand the Swedish-made Bubs?

Orkla Confectionery & Snacks, the current owner of Bubs AB Sweden, has rebranded the Bubs logo and their pre-packaged bags in Sweden.

As you can see below, they renamed and redesigned all of their Bubs mini bags. They also redesigned their Bubs logo, moving away from the historical logo.

Moving forward, however, let's not mistake the Swedish-made Bubs for the Mexican-made Bubs, since, as of now, they are not the same candy at all.

You can always check the bag and see if it was actually made in Sweden or in North America.
